Damaged Overflow Drain Pan

There are three main reasons as to why air conditioning leaks. The first cause is that the overflow drain pan is damaged in some way. You can easily detect any signs of damage with the help from a flashlight. You may be wondering “what is an overflow drain pan?” It is a piece of equipment that traps the condensation from the air conditioner.

To properly check for damage, remember to check every corner and above the wettest spot of the pan. Any kind of small holes or cracks can be easily patched up with glue, but it may be in your best interest to replace the pan entirely.

Clogged Filter

The second cause for a leaky AC unit is having a clogged filter. Having a dirty filter may cause ice to appear on the evaporator coils. Once that ice melts, it will start to leak water, which can cause water damage to other areas of your home. If your air filter is dirty, you need to replace the it immediately. A lot of filters are supposed to be used for one to two months, however, it’s best if you check your filter every month during the winter seasons.

Backed Up Condensate Line

The third and final main cause is actually the most common among the trio; a backed up condensate line. The condensate line is what drains the condensation from the overflow drain pan to the outside, or in some cases, to another pipeline. Should the line be clogged, it will cause the water to back up and flood the entire drain pan.

Nowadays, a lot of air conditioning units come with a built-in feature known as a water-overflow cut off switch. This will cause your air conditioner shut down automatically should it detect that the condensate line is clogged.

While can help prevent water damage, most homeowners are left scratching their heads as to why their AC randomly shut off. In turn, they will call a professional repair service. There are ways to unclog your condensate line. One such way includes the use of a wet-dry vacuum to suck out the clog.

If you discover your air conditioning is leaking, the worst thing you can do is nothing at all. Small leaks can turn into huge problems overnight. The first step is finding the source of the leak. If you aren’t able to remedy the issue, reach out to your local HVAC company for help
